We wanted to visit Asheville this wknd but I found out about some type of festival that is going on so I need anther destination. I am looking for a place that is in the North West part of the state close enought that we can see some mountain views. Would like an affordable B&B (20 year anv trip but only have 2 nights). In terests include old mansions/historic homes to tour, old cemetary, maybe a trolley ride. Needs to be an easy drive from raleigh. We have already been to Boone so would like someone different. Suggestions?

Historic Balsam Mountain Inn, a North Carolina Blue Ridge treasure

Although it's southwest NC (beyond Asheville) rather than northwest toward Boone.

River House Inn in Ashe County.

If you're up for something with mountain views but not "in" the mountains, how about some of the B&Bs in or around Charlottesville, VA?

We ended up in Mt Airy and it was great. What a cute little town to stroll around sight seeing. We also visited Pilot Mountain. I recommend both places for an easy "mountain" visit

Next time, try Blowing Rock. We were there this weekend and sort of wished we'd left the kid with grandma.

I've done several 2 and 3-day weekends in the SE part of the state and one format I like is driving 4 hours to Maggie Valley, (a nice little town SW of Asheville with a good range of lodging selection and is central to the SE settings).
From there you can drive to Cherokee for shows at the casino, or do touristy things there. Plus you can drive around the "corner" of the mountains to the west, jump on the Blue Ridge Parkway and head back towards Asheville, or take the road across the mountains to Gatlinburg for some fantastic mountain driving/scenery.
