I haven't seen a better deal yet, and I suspect they will be a hot item.

Okay, you guys are speaking greek now, so let me ask a dumb question.

I'm on the Standard plan (15 Mbps?) and recently purchased a SB6121

Now considering what you guys are discussing with the anticipated new service, will my new modem be sufficient, or will I need to replace it?

I'm feeling like I should have consulted with you all before buying! LOL

Standard will eventually be bumped to 50/5, which the SB6121 is allowed to run. You should be fine. Here's the breakdown from what I've read. These max speeds are set with the configuration file on your modem and is based on how many channels the modem can bond for speed:

SB6121: up to 50/5 (4x4 channels)
SB6141: up to 100/10 (8x4 channels)
SB6183: up to 300/20 (16x4 channels)

They fail so much that renting is a better option

I've never had a failure with my cable modem in the 10+ years I've had one.

They would have to fail every six months given the fee. Sorry, I've used exactly 4 cable modems in 15 years without a failure. Only swapping when required by TWC or when they added the fee.

My SB6141 was $50 on Ebay. The SB5101 I upgraded from was $10. The lease would have been $8/mo. on either. Do the math. If you're experiencing a lot of failures, try putting your modem behind a UPS or surge protector. Might be getting zapped.

I used to work at Time Warner doing Road Runner technical support when it first came to this area and believe me, modems are replaced all the time due to failures. I still own my own modem though, because I would rather risk having to buy a new one than pay TWC one extra penny. Over the past 3 years I have had the same Motorola model that I bought on sale , so this one has more than paid for itself.
