Traffic and sprawl. The need to own a car to do anything. Just gorgeous.

If you are concerned about poor school performance you may want to read the N&O article about how North Carolina students trail the nation on ACT test

North Carolina students trail the nation on ACT test | Education | NewsObserver.com

NC is one of nine states where all juniors take the ACT. If all states required all students to take the ACT, there may be some states with lower scores than NC. But at this point, NC is at the bottom. (NC is also near the bottom in teacher compensation. 47th was the last I heard. Recent legislative action have not improved the situation.)

Wake County public school district avoids having schools identified as poor performers by shuffling students around the district. The idea is that low income students do better in schools in higher income neighborhoods. However, I have yet to see any stats or studies documenting this. Changes in this shuffling policy recently. Plenty of threads discussing this.

The crime stats and school performance scores are easily available online. I believe there are links in the threads mentioned by a previous poster or a quick Google or Bing search will reveal them.

One of the best ways to to get a quick feel if a neighborhood is a good fit for you is to drive through it and notice the cars and the front yards.

Personally, I try to AVOID the Harris Teeter at Cameron Village. Always lots of students there performing poorly. Douchebag Central all the way around. If that's not a crime, it should be.

Them public libraries. Too much book learning going on there. Damn kids and their word reading. Socialism.

There is NOTHING wrong with North Durham. That is WRONG info. PARTS of East Durham are less desirable... but by no means all of it. There are PARTS of every town in the Triangle that are less desirable. But there is no town worth avoiding.

Except Cary that is.... :>)

Schools, I dont know. But do a search, there is plenty of info here....

If you're looking for areas to avoid, I'd say stay out of South Chicago and avoid Detroit altogether.

I've driven through a few sketchy areas in Durham and Raleigh and even a trailer park in Cary (she said, clutching her pearls), but I've yet to see anything comparable to areas in other metropolitan areas I've been to.

For the most part it's very walkable. We can walk almost everywhere.

I would avoid the inner and outer beltlines...plus I-40 at rush hours and during hard rains. It gets mighty dangerous out there

I avoid the Whole Foods parking lots. Too many Priuses, Subaru wagons, and women with hairy armpits wearing Birkenstocks.
