One of my tires has a slow leak. Need a recommendation for a good tire shop. I'm going on a trip immediately afterward, so the patch has to be done right. Thanks.

Also, what do shops typically charge for a patch job?

Call up Just Tires if there's one near you and ask how much to patch from the inside. I don't think they patch them any other way.

Discount Tire will patch it for free and no appointment is needed although you can make one for a specific time slot if desired.

Why would they do that for free? What's the catch? Just the opportunity to advertise their services and wares?

That is about it.
They are highly service oriented, have to pay the guys for being there anyway, and want the chance to prove themselves. Maybe they can earn the shot at selling you replacement tires when the time comes.

Beware that if the tire has what they deem an unpatchable issue DT will not let you leave with it on your car. May not apply in this case but it's worth noting.

Also be aware that DT (at least the one on Harrison in Cary) will only use patches. In the summertime, I've had patches come loose due to the heat and have the tire start leaking again. I had DT patch the same tire twice one summer, only to have it work loose. I took the tire to a different shop and they put in a plug, which fixed it for good. That said, I always go to DT for all my tire needs.

I've known Discount Tire to use both plugs and patches depending on the requirements of the leak. I wonder if the "patch only" mentality is at that location only.

Probably a nail in it, if a slow leak. Just get it plugged if not on the sidewall, which they would not plug anyway. Normally I pay $8-$10 to get a tire plugged.

You can buy plug kits at any place that has an automotive section or at an auto parts store. it's easy to do yourself.
