If all you have is shade fescue is hands down the best fit for your lawn. Without shade, fescue dies quickly. Even with all the rain we had over the summer, the recent lack of rain has started to turn my grass brown, and in some areas it's already died.

With the way homes are so quickly constructed these days, the top layer of soil is just destroyed. If the size of your yard permits it, it would be a good idea to add a nice thick (2" or so) layer of "black gold" dirt to your lawn.

Exactly. I can clearly see the grass is so much nicer where I have partial to mostly shaded areas.

+1 on the brown patch. I have it too. All that rain a few months back took its toll

Has anyone seen the label on the John Deere transitional blend grass seed? I'm looking for a grass seed with one of the "†best of the best in Raleigh location from last 5-year study." cultivatiors listed here:

I found a new site that may be helpful:

Area calculator - Outline a property on a google map and find its area

For years I have seriously over estimated how much grass I actually have. With this sight, in combo with googlemaps, you can draw lines around the grass in your yard and get the area. I had been esitimating I had 14000 square feet. Last night I figured out I really only have 9000 square feet. So I've been putting about 1/3 more product down than I really needed.

My early review of 3rd Millennium fescue. This seed really scared me. It is really slow geminating. I was thinking I threw my money away. It took a full 21 days to see any grass pop up. Now it’s coming in good and that’s fine with me. We’ll see how good it is long term.

If you lost a lot of fescue this year then you are in for it! One of the more mild summers I can remember.

Weather the last two weeks has been perfect for overseeding. Got mine in about 10 days ago and the yard is already full of new sprouts. Rain rain rain rain. Love it.

If I were going to be in my house long term I would absolutely switch from fescue to something else. Its a never ending dance.

I think I had too much water this year. Part of me wishes I'd lose the whole thing and force myself into stadium bermuda or Zoysia.
