As miserable as the Seventies were, one thing that it did have was Hi-Fi stores where you could go and listen to a variety of speakers and electronics. That's kind of obsolete nowadays, but I need a pair of speakers and I would like to hear a few before I purchase.
Are there any places like that anywhere around here? Most of what people call audio nowadays is car woofers, home theaters, and iPod earbuds, and the practice of listening to music (as opposed to hearing it) seems to be a bygone.
^ Agree. They carry low high-end to mid high-end components. Staff is knowledgeable and helpful. They've serviced a few of my amps as well. Nice not to have to ship 60lb components around the US.

I remember taking my ELP album into one of the rooms and putting on Lucky Man to try out the then new Infinity tower speakers with the massive row of tweeters. Do any of the places have private rooms for that?
They do. Call ahead to have the speakers of your choice set up. I was there a few months ago and sat for a long time listening to my own music as well as some good multi-mic recordings that they had which were much better in producing a wide and deep soundstage.
Although they are primarily headphone oriented, Moon Audio in Cary is a place to check out. Just make sure to call ahead of time as they are mainly geared for internet sales. They do have a listening room.
And actually, Best Buy has a room set up at the Crabtree store in the Magnolia area. Not as much stuff as Audio Advice and of course not locally owners, but they may have some lower end brands than AA if you are looking for more mid range gear.
