Wife and I want to celebrate our 5 year anniversary with something fun...not expensive!

We live in Cary/Apex and we want idea for something outdoorsy to do.

Wouldn't mind driving 2-3 hours, but want to go on a hike somewhere that has a waterfall or an amazing view...

Any suggestions or ideas?

My favorites are the various falls along the Blue Ridge Parkway.

Take a look at The Best Hikes to Waterfalls in Western North Carolina. I've been to Pantertown Valley and there are a lot of waterfalls in the area, but it would take longer than you are looking for to reach. There are a few others that are closer, though.

I'd head to the Boone/Blowing Rock area. It may take a little longer than 3 hrs from Cary, but not much. It's crammed with beautiful scenery, waterfalls and amazing views.

If you really don't want to drive that far (and I definitely would — it's worth it) then check out Hanging Rock State Park north of the Triad.

We thoroughly enjoyed our waterfall hike at South Mountain State Park. I'm sure it is quite impressive with all the rain we've seen this summer. It is quite the hike up, but SO worth it!

This may not suit your timing, but sunset on the top of Craggy Gardens near Asheville is something I could do every night. It is a short hike so you can easily make it back to the parking lot via cell phone light.
