After a two-year delay, N.C. Department of Transportation Secretary Tony Tata says the 540 project needs to be completed due to population growth in the Triangle and Wake County. The NCDOT is studying possible routes for the project, and a new timetable suggests that construction could begin in 2018 and be completed in 2022.

Not all of us want to live in apartments/condos in the city.

Not everyone drives to work every day (I drive once a week).

Not everyone drives an SUV that gets 15 MPG.

There are many pros and cons of living in and out of the city, respectively.

There are people who drive between Durham and Wilmington. There are people in Southern Pines going to Rocky Mount or even New York. There are people in Fayetteville trying to get to Henderson. Etc. RDU draws people from a radius of 50 to 75 miles. What do all these diverse groups (and truckers) have in common? They want to avoid I-40 through Raleigh, and for good reason.

That said, there certainly are people in Apex who work in Clayton, people in Wendell who work in Garner, etc. Not every employer, and particularly not every manufacturer, can be crammed into a three-mile circle around the State Capitol.
