Hi Friends
I have a friend visiting next month and it will be beak season for the colors.

Don't want to go more than 2 hours if possible.
Day hike or zip lining

How about Boone?

suggestions welcome..

What's "beak season". Is that when all the birds are flying south?

I'm guessing that should say peak season. 2 hours might be kind of though, but it also depends a little on where you are coming from in the Triangle. Boone is probably more than 2 hours away from anywhere in the Triangle. Hanging Rock would be within 2 hours though, but I'm not sure where you'd stay there since I generally think of that as more of a day trip. Since you're going overnight why the 2 hour limit? Is camping a possibility? Remember, everyone heads west in October to see the colors so lodging fills-up fast and costs more.

Hanging Rock would be nice for a day hike. We went over 4th of July and from Durham it took us just about 2 hours. It is a bit isolated though for lodging. We ended up staying in Pilot Mountain and spending one afternoon hiking around there.

I think that the Boone area offers more - we spent Labor Day weekend just outside of Boone and enjoyed it. It was a 3 hour drive, but there were more options for lodging, food and other attractions.

Are they wine fans at all? One of the wineries up in Yadkinville has a zipline, I do believe, and it's not that far away to Pilot Mountain if you wanted to hike.
