Just a bit of grasping here, but there may be places near downtown Durham and Duke, as there are some beautiful old homes in the area. It would work great for for the commute to Hillsborough, although I would think the commute to NCSU would be a good 30 minutes each way, maybe a bit more with traffic where the Durham Freeway merges onto I-40. Otherwise, though, the commute would be mostly opposite of the traffic coming in Raleigh & Cary heading into RTP along I-40.
Croasdaile is probably AS convenient to Hillsborough as she can get. It's not as convenient to the job though. Brier creek - as jkgourmet said - peaks out at ~ 11 years old and is a very large, somewhat homogenous neighborhood. If she likes that - great. If not, there'd be no reason to look in there.
Try Wessex in Cary. Right off 40. Just a thought. Homes will be around 15-20 years old. Mature trees. Convenient to NCSU. Easy to grab 40 and head to Hillsborough.
