Hi,

We are moving from Illinois to NC in mid Jan and thinking about living in Raleigh and around areas.
My husband who is IT professional, will be working from home for another 6-8 months and he will be looking for jobs too. I am an electronics engineer, housewife right now, also will be looking for job in IT industry. We have a four year old son.

I wd really appreciate if anyone can help us in finding a good area to live. We are looking for:

Good Asian Indian community
Good schools
good hospital nearby
has park, library or other kids activity nearby
has grocery store , pharmacy etc in 10- 15 min drive
job opportunity

We are planning to rent an apartment or a small house. We will be in Raleigh and around to check the place during Chrismas. Which area we should look for, considering the above requirements?
Thanks

Just about everywhere around Raleigh meets your requirements, except for maybe the SE side of Raleigh. My huband is Asian Indian and I can tell you there is a large Indian population in the Cary and Morrisville area. These areas are also very close to RTP where there is a high concentration of IT professionals. Cary has a lot of Indian grocery stores and Indian specialty stores as well (clothing, videos and music, beauty shops etc) But really, you can't go wrong with Raleigh and some of the other smaller suburban towns like Apex and Holly Springs either.
I think you will just need to come and see the area and feel it out for yourselves. Each areas has distinct pros and cons. Good luck!

Thanks Lamishra,

We don't know anyone in that area. Do you have any suggestions how should we plan to go around? Should we contact a realtor and ask to show some apartments in the area?

North Durham is also a great place to look. Tons of parks, very close to shopping and schools, Hospitals, etc. Also a very easy drive to RTP since there isn't as much traffic. Downtown Durham is also seeing a lot of companies open offices there. If you want to rent, you can also find some nice rental homes.

Realtors don't generally show apartments or any sort of rental property. I think you need to find a rental agency or property managnemnt company before you come down. I'm not familiar with how people go about finding apartments. Maybe someone else will come along and help you with that!
I'd say that you should come down and stay in a hotel in central Raleigh somewhere and then spend the weekend driving around the different areas to get a feel for the different places. The nice thing about renting is that you aren't stuck living there forever if you don't like it!

Why is it that when someone asks about places to live in Raleigh people advise others to stay away from SE Raleigh. What is that all about?? Just wondering.....

Nowhere in my post did I say "stay away from SE Raleigh". Based on her criteria, I don't think there is a significant Asian Indian population on that side of Raleigh compared to others as well as less job opportunities on that side of town for IT professionals. If I were an IT person who wanted to be closer to work/jobs I would stick to the Western side of the triangle.

jsuji, most of your requirements are easily met in any community here in the Triangle. The only unusual point you mention is the Indian community and, as Lamishra said, you'll probably find more of them in Cary and Morrisville. You're also more likey to find work at a company within Research Triangle Park (RTP), which is located on the eastern side of Durham. So since you'll be renting first, I would focus my search within those areas. It's a fairly central location for the Triangle, too.

Not all of the Triangle is in Durham County. The part that adding the most jobs now is in Northwestern Wake County.

Who said it was? Looks to me like people have made recommendations in both Durham & Wake counties, so I honestly don't understand your comment, rnc2mbfl. Care to offer recommendations of your own?
