Went to Dickeys at Wakefield the weekend. It was ok, I would go back. If you are looking vinegar based NC BarBQue, this is NOT the place. The selections reminds me of Danny's in Cary....chopped pork, beef brisket, etc.
We went last Friday for lunch. It was a madhouse. They were giving away cookbooks and had $2 sandwiches. The food was good but I hate crowds. Some guy won free BBQ for a year and another won $500.
I'm just glad to have "better than average" BBQ within 2 min of my house and plan to eat there quite a bit. I know it's not the best, the most gourmet, etc, but it's darn good and close to home. 'nuf said.
I can't defend specific Smithfields, and it's certainly not Wilber's in Goldsboro which is the pinnacle of eastern NC BBQ. I'm just saying that Smithfields aspires to serve native BBQ. Whether or not they're successful at that aspiration is a separate question.
I like Smithfields also. They don't have the best of anything, be it BBQ, Hush Puppies, Slaw, shrimp, whatever, but they have good versions of everything, IMO.

Right on brother. No need to be a total snob about everything, just enjoy when it's good enough, right?
This is almost as bad as "which oil is best for my bike" threads on other forums!
There's BBQ, there's GREAT BBQ, and there's bad BBQ. The latter, being rare. If it's bad, they don't stay around long. Saying a certain style is awful because you prefer a different style, is childish.
I feel lucky, there are several places when I always seem to be able to count on getting a good meal. I enjoy all kinds of BBQ, Eastern Carolina, Texas, Memphis, etc.
I've seen plenty of debates about how "nasty NC style BBQ is", or "how terrible Texas style BBQ is". And I've seen plenty of restaurants given crappy reviews because the person doing the review didn't like that style of BBQ.
I think we're quite lucky to have numerous good BBQ options here in the Triangle, and some world class options within an hours drive!
