I call those fake bagels 'a roll with a hole.'

When we first moved here a few years back I used to go to Manhattan Café more. The bagel maker was a big Islanders fan from New York. It changed hands a year or two ago. Nice people and the bagels are still pretty good but inventory is sometimes a problem for me. My son prefers salt bagels and they do not stock them all day or even early on weekends so many times I just go to Brueggers because they have hot bagels throughout the day and usually have salt bagels. Also regarding NY Bagel Dept., the one on Kildaire Farms Road, their rye bread is worth the drive for. But I would not say their bagels are so superior that they are worth going out of your way for. Its a better bagel than most but didn't wow me like I need to go only there.

Great salads, too, and I worry about that moribund shopping center providing them with adequate traffic to survive.

I don't have a comment about bagels, I just wanted to applaud your use of "moribund" here.

Contemporary bagels have evolved into merely bagel-shaped objects.

+1. I haven't been able to find a decent bagel in north Raleigh for over 10 years now.

BAGELS PLUS! Great food, sandwiches and exceptional bagels. Located on Hwy. 55, between Fuquay Varina and Holly Springs, odd location but easy to find. Wonderful pastries, breads, and more. Try it, you will love it.

Very true. We used to encounter bread with a hole there too and it brought on much scorn.

lol agreed twingles. You're comparing frozen bagels from Manhattan Cafe to the fresh ones at NYBD III. There really is no comparison between the two. Manhattan Cafe makes great Japanese pastries on Wednesdays though.

Monday I was having lunch with some of my coworkers, all from NJ/NY. They lamented the lack of good bagels in this area. I made a bet with them that NYBD III would deliver them from their cravings. The next morning I brought in a half dozen bagels for our morning meeting. My one coworker started hugging the bag of bagels she was so happy with them
