Is Durham doing anything to celebrate the holidays? I heard from a friend the parade was eliminated, and I can't find ANY information on "Light Up Durham". I went last year, and it was OBVIOUS that cuts had been made - it was less-fabulous than previous years.
Yes, I saw that, but in the past this was in conjunction with "Light Up Durham" - local school choirs, dance performances, acrobats, bands, a big celebration. I don't see any mention of that on the website. Are they just going to light the tower up and that's it? And why did Durham discontinue the Christmas parade anyway?
I have lived in Durham 7 years and always have wondered why this big city doesn't have a Christmas parade. It baffles me.
Durham's only Christmas parade happens in Parkwood and gets bigger every year. It's on the edge of RTP:
Featuring Southern High, Hillside High and Jordan High marching bands, local elected officials, Boy Scout and Girl Scout troops, horses, local businesses, antique cars, local groups, Durham police, the Durham Sheriff's Office, Wool E. Bull, and Fire Department trucks with an appearance by Santa Claus.
December 2, 2012, 2pm., Parkwood Neighborhood, Sedwick Dr. and Revere Rd., (919) 544-2161
The parade will start at 2pm at the western end of Sedwick Road and will continue onto Revere Road, ending at the Parkwood Volunteer Fire Department station. Free refreshments will be provided afterward at the Fire Station.
There used to be a parade downtown. We went twice, and i thought there were too many loud cars and motorcycles in the parade. It wasn't what i wanted in a parade...
Fun fest is fun, but not so much if you don't have young kids.

People forget that the parade in Raleigh is not put on by the City of Raleigh. It is organzied and funded through the Greater Raleigh Merchant's Association and has sponsors. It is held to both celebrate Christmas and kick off the holiday shopping season. That is why it has been held the Saturday before Thanksgiving for the past 67 years. They put a lot of money into the parade to organize it. They even charge each organization with a float a fee to participate (my band played in the parade for two years and we paid $100 each time). I think they waive the fee for high schools.
Bottom line, large parades are expensive so if people don't show up I can see why the city of Durham decided to end it.
Wow. Yeah, there was a parade as recently as 2005 or so - the church youth group I headed up was in it for two years. And the part about saving money makes sense; however, don't other smaller towns and cities still do parades? I thought Cary had one. I know the small town where I work (Dunn, NC) still does one, so it's odd that Durham can't pull one off after having them so many decades.
