Definitely check out Heritage in Wake Forest. You'll have shops nearby with grocery stores, etc but Heritage is such a large n'hood that you won't be able to walk from one end to another. Downtown WF is cute.
I've been to New Orleans (wouldn't want to live down there either!)! I've been to Williamsburg, VA and Jackson Hole and although they are great places to visit, I wouldn't want to live in the middle of all that. Those are great places to visit.
After a while, wouldn't you get bored with walking to the same places?
As for not liking downtown Raleigh, I just have no reason to spend too much time down there. I guess I prefer suburbia!
I do love shopping and I've been downtown Apex, window shopping and spending time just wandering about. A great way to spend a few hours. But...if I lived in Apex (which I adore), I just don't think that is something I'd want to do daily or even weekly. But, that is just me.
I'd find the neighborhood that I really loved, the house I loved and then I'd plan on doing some driving to explore. I just think walking around the same area is going to get tiresome. But...that is me.
Yes, loved the trees which helped provide shade. Unlike Charleston which felt barren with those little palmettos. Beautiful city though.
