Yes being local is important for landing an accounting job as soft skill is required more so on-site interview matters a lot.
Well, accounting is an area which hands-on experience is more crucial than some other areas, so new graduates suffer more in the first 5 years, same to the ones only passed CPA, once they get a bit experience it becomes easier for them if the market is decent. But if the market is too bad then everyone is difficult. I wonder how difficult to land a job for an experienced accountant nowadays?

Yeah, that's mostly thanks to Northern Virginia though; remove those counties and that number becomes a lot worse. So, unless you're planning on moving up there (which you're not, due to cost of living), the unemployment rate is relatively similar.
