Zoysia- Brown in January with little to no watering and no annual overseeding.
Fescue- Brown in July with high water bills and overseeding expense each fall.
Fought with fescue for the first 18 years here from the North because thats what I was used to. 2 years ago put in Zoysia and with the money saved from watering and overseeding annually I have someone cutting grass for me now. Question is brown in January or brown in July- in this area your going to get some brown no matter how hard you try.

Yes. I cut with a rotary mower. No problem at all. I never considered a reel mower.
The only thing is, it grows so uniformly, when it takes off in the early summer, it can get higher than you realize, and can be a thick bugger to cut.
I have tall fescue now. My neighbors say that they hardly ever water their lawns, but ours seems to require it. Even watering and mowing the lawn still began to die, although we just got the house in August and I wonder if the previous owners had over-fertalized before we moved in. Although our lawn is coming back now, it required a lot of TLC (aeration, seeding, water). Perhaps this is a less than normal situation, I don't know, I'm new to fescue.
Another neighbor of ours has Zoysia and it's a beautiful lawn. She uses a traditional mower.
Hey I like green grass just as much as the next guy/girl, but the expense of properly maintaining a fescue lawn is a drain...on your money and time! I couldn't care less about the brown grass my bermuda sod shows int he winter because it's going to look great 7-8 months out of the year and requires very little maintenance.
The cost and waste of watering fescue to keep in green during the summer is ridiculous, especially with our hot and dry summers, which will probably be even more frequent moving forward. I'd plant cactus plants and have no grass if our HOA would let us get away with it...lol

this is when I have to shelve the reel mower. You could lose a small dog in it, but it still looks fairly neat and uniform.
