if you spend some time thinking about whatever societal problem that you'd like to help overcome, then you start googling that problem, then the organization(s) that are trying to overcome that problem will be easily found.

I'd like to help overcome the problem of youngsters starting down a wrong path that might lead them to prison. Not sure if that's a volunteery kind of thing, tho.

The Y and BBBS are the two largest youth-centered non-profits in this region; but there are many, many smaller organizations as well.
