Say what you want about the President but this is a whole lot of awesome. There will be no keeping people from moving here now, especially the really smart ones.

I kind of doubt it. If you want to be a country music star, you go to Nashville. If you want to be a musical theater actor, you go to New York. If you want to launch a tech startup, you go to Silicon Valley. That isn't to say that there isn't great innovation and technology here, but I doubt it would displace SV.

I dunno that I think that all tech startups need to be in SV. There's a decent amount of tech talent around here.
We have quite a few biotech startups around here, for example. Still, no... this place isn't going to displace SV anytime soon. I do agree there.

This reminds me of when my mother became ill and when she was finally diagnosed (she had a rare illness) it was a doctor in a dinky dink community hospital who caught it. We had been to specialists all over Manhattan for 4 years!! When she was finally under treatment, people kept suggesting she should be seeing doctors in NYC because that's where the best doctors are. True, but not in her case.
My point...there is tech talent here too. This will encourage and help develop those with the natural aptitudes and talent. And while we may never be Silicon Valley, good for NC and the triangle for having the talent it DOES have!
On a scale to nothing- to landing a major portion of the EPA in RTP in the 1960s, where will this fall?
I wonder also about the impact compared to RTP in general. I did not listen to the speech, but from what I have seen reported he acted like he was starting some new high tech jobs thing here. Have all the people working out there the last 40 years been building Amish buggies with hand tools?
I just got back from Carolantic's annual Commerical Real Estate conference and they reported a stat that showed this area ranking right up there world wide in new business creation. Now we are not Silicon Valley, but I think more and more people are realizing you can do something elsewhere as well.
I was sort of tongue-in-cheek with the Silicon Valley reference but truth be told, we're already sort of right behind them and perfectly positioned to further expand. We have the great university system funneling talent, we have entrenched technology, biotech and pharmaceuticals businesses and a way more attractive cost-of-living. Announcements like today will only serve to further enhance RTP's reputation and that's ultimately a good thing.
