I do wonder if the fear of lawsuits factors in, though.

I think the 'stay home' philosophy is not as much from the lack of de-icing or sanders, etc. but more to do with how the roads down here are sloped for inches of rainfall with reasonably large ditches on each side of the road.

So you start skidding or sliding and you end up with some part of your car in the ditch with more than 1 tire in the air spinning and need towing!

In the north, the shoulders of the roads are reasonably flat, have an accumulation of dirt/sand/grit and/or have a curb - so they are designed to KEEP you on the road instead of throwing you OFF!

It's SO good that they didn't send the kids out to school in this mess today! The next two Saturdays as makeup days will be SO much better!

About half of my department of 30 at work is missing this morning. I think they decided to take the day off, and most of them are not parents with kids at home because of the school closures. Lazy bums!

They are just following direct orders from Greg Fischel. Have him write them an excuse paper to turn in.

Actually I doubt it does. Contingency planning is based on the forecast probabilities, time frame for making and implementing a decision, and the logistics for carrying it out. "What if we get sued" rarely factors into the thinking in any meaningful way.

Not all the kids are year round students.

Agreed. I was pointing this out the other day to a friend, how one small misstep on many secondary roads around here puts you in a ditch and potentially heading upside-down into a tree line.
