My wife and I are considering renting in a few outskirt towns, the 2 leaders are Clayton and F-V. When I'm in town I love F-V, but the commute to the PNC arena area for my wife is concerning. She currently works 7a-7p.
Does anyone make that commute? How long does it usually take in traffic?

She'd be driving outside of peak times and won't hit very much traffic so you're looking at about 30 minutes each way.
Assuming she would take NC55 to US1 to the Beltline, the only congested area would be about a 2 mile stretch in Apex (just before US1). But if she's leaving around 6:30 am, it really shouldn't be too much of a problem. 30-40 minutes, depending on what part of "The Quay" she leaves from and how many stoplights she encounters in town.
