I do know the gel isn't healthy and I go long periods with regular manucures but I am a nurse and when I worked NICU I couldn't do my nails at all.....now I enjoy doing them but I wash my hands ** all.day.long** so the gels are nice for me. They don't chip, so less micro organisms in theory......
And BTW...just FYI...everyone at the nail salons here have an attitude. :-(
Thanks for all the responses and suggestions!!
I'm a nurse too, an NP and I recommend looking into the other health risks associated with the gel nail applications. I wasn't joking about the increased melanoma risk. I work in a Cancer Center.....
ljd....I know you are right. I saw the NY Post article when it was first published. :-( I also occasionally go to tanning salons come May which I am sure is much worse.......
Not sure this has anything to do with it but in my experience the salon techs are Vietnamese. In NYC area they are Korean. (Anyone remember the hilarious Seinfeld episode???). I get my nails done in NY in Bayside and a 30 year veteran manicurist told me the reason they don't put on the shoes here is because it is harder to polish a nail already in a flip flop. She was also blown away by the prices. Could it be that they are trained differently? Whatever the training, here, NY, wherever, sanitary practices should be abided by or they should be shut down.
