Hey! We are moving from the Morrisville area in the next year and were interested in getting some opinions on the Garner area. All I know of it is Scotty McCreary is from there Can anyone lend some insight? I have a 4 year old who will be going to school in a year so what are the schools like? Is garner very family friendly? Homes and neighborhoods that are better than others? Things to do out and about besides downtown Raleigh? Any advice would be great!!! Thanks in advance!!

Just out of curiosity, if you live near Morrisville are you not able to make any sort of determination about Garner for yourself?

Schools- don't know; we didn't research before buying because we plan to homeschool. I do know a teacher who works at one of the elem. schools and she says they have a bad rap that they don't deserve. But, again, I know nothing about them!

Family friendly- absolutely!!! Part of what drew us here. Lots of families, parks, activities, etc. The people are very down to earth. No "keeping up with the Jones" mentality, which also drew us here.

Homes & neighborhoods- budget would help. We had a very low budget (upper 90k, lower 100k) and 2 years later we are still in love with our n'hood .

Things to do- LOTS! Summer concert series, shows/plays at the GPAC, Fireman's day in Oct, Christmas parade, 4th of July celebration, lots of parks, parks and rec has a lot of programming, a couple good mom and pop style restaurants, White Oak shopping, and I'm probably leaving stuff off.

Like Meh said, you're close so come check it out!!! Drive around at different times of day/night, especially the n'hoods you might be considering.

We love Garner. I grew up in Cary (graduated from CHS in the early 90's) and Garner reminds me of Cary before the explosion.

The quality of school really depends on which school you are assigned too. We have the highest rate of bussed in kids in the county. Schools in the nothrern side of town typically don't perform as well as the others. We moved to a north Garner neighborhood because of the downtown revitalization plan, in hopes to have a more walkable, small town atmosphere. It's happening slowly. My kids go to Timber Drive Elementary and it as been a wonderful experience for them.

There are lots of great, affordable neighborhoods in Garner...older, established homes and neighborhoods and new builds. You really have a choice there.

Like sowk09 said, there's a ton of stuff to do in Garner. My kids participate in the parks and rec sports programs and some of the other activities. It's a great place to raise kids in a small town atmosphere. It's nice to run into the mayor at the local coffee shop and have the grocery clerks and pharmacist know your name.

We lived in Garner (we had a Raleigh address but it was essentially Garner).
My kids went to Rand Road elementary - we were really happy with that school.
LOVED the people in Garner - everyone was so nice and friendly. We loved the sports there - Garner Baseball Inc (GBI) and Pop Warner (Garner Trojans)
What we didn't like was how "rural" it was where we lived. It was 6 miles to Food Lion (closest grocery store) and I'm a suburban gal! So we moved to Holly Springs. But I miss the people in Garner.

We live in the clayton/ garner area of johnston county(40/42) area and love it. Not sure if u were thinking wake or johnston part of garner??...there r differences as far as schools( johnston has traditional calendar and no redistributing... Your child goes to the neighborhood school) and johnston being more rural and a bit further from downtown Raleigh.(@. 25 min.). But whether it's the johnston side or wake side...tons to do, shopping, nature trails/ lakes rivers , movies, theater, sports fields ect....all within 15 min. Of wherever u r in garner.

Average 3-4 B.r. Upscale House in nice neighborhood...@ 250,000. Many in the 200 range too( 2 story without bells and whistles....but still under 5 yrs old)...and under 200 for your basic 3 b.r. Rancher on 1/2 acre lot.( many in our area for $150).

Never been to morrisville so can't really make a comparison.
Good luck!
