insideout is a great resource for Gay Straight Alliancess in NC: iNSIDEoUT About Us .

That is a very good resource, poppydog.

Terry Sanford spoke at my high school graduation. My daddy was over the moon about it. I think that was more exciting to him than me getting my diploma.

My sister had a "Terry Sanford for President" button back in the day. Wonder if she still has it?

Don't think of FV as a small town in the south. It's not that at all, although it was one in a former life. FV is an outer suburb of the sprawling Raleigh/Cary metro area. A majority of folks who live there are commuting to work somewhere else. I have friends with kids who have moved down into that part of wake county for the cheaper real estate, and the general consensus is it's a little more country, but still a bunch of yankee transplants This area is full of yankee transplants, btw!

Also, schools here are run at the county level, not by individual towns. I would go to the WCPSS website and plug your new address in to their lookup tool, you may not actually even be assigned to FVHS, even if she lives close enough for you see in the windows. You might also be able to choose another option, such as a magnet school or a charter, I'm not sure how that is handled for new students but it's something to look into.

I'm a parent of a gay child, and I wouldn't have a problem with that child attending FVHS.

It's probably a collector's item if she does.

I'm so glad you posted here!

I know we have some FV residents on the board, but not as many as in other areas. This is good info.

I don't have any inside information with regard to Seanathan's original question about gays in FV, but I recall going to my daughters basketball game and one of the cheerleaders was a very talented male dancer/gymnast. 😄 I am not saying this young man is gay, but it's not everyday that I see a male cheerleader and the crowd was very positively receptive to him. If you are strong confident young man...you should have no problem. Best of luck to you!!

OK, not to disparage North Carolina's genuine progressive legacy, and I realize I'm getting a little off-topic here, but I feel obligated to point out that 61% of the state voted for a constitutional amendment to prohibit same-sex marriage. Those weren't all transplants from the north. If you look at a map of where gay marriage is legal, and where it is explicitly prohibited by law, you'll get an idea of where people might get the notion that the south is less progressive than some other parts of the country.

Yes, they did. But look at the county's where that did not pass. (Hint, Wake Durham and Orange county.)

That 'law' will be going down as soon as the challenges get to a high enough court.

Also? Not everyone in Durham, Orange, and Wake is a transplant.
