Found a door hanger from opponents to the rezoning on my door the other day. Below is a link to their newsletter. Interesting to see the the approach they are taking. I forsee some heated public meetings in the future. Full disclosure, I'm on the fence about this project. While I don't support the developer or current proposal / plan I also don't agree with all the arguments and claims opponents to the rezoning have made.
North Raleigh Coalition of Homeowners are using propaganda to prevent rezoning for a neighborhood retail center, likely containing enviromentally friendly grocer Publix and has gone through countless environmental impact studies, yet they are overly content with the aroma of sewage smells and possible pollution from the E.M. Johnson Water Treatment Plant. It makes you wonder.
I shop at Publix. I know firsthand they are opposite what NORCHOA may be wrongfully portraying them and the retail center.
I live in Bedford, and I support the rezoning. I find it funny that the same people who built/bought houses on cleared farmland and added to sprawl suddenly are opposed to it.

"If the city council votes to allow the rezoning, they are voting to REDUCE the property value of EVERY resident in our subdivisions."
That's highly debatable. It'd actually be a plus for me to live close to said retail.
Regardless, in the end I foresee this project getting approval. These people can't have their cake and eat it too. There's so much irony in the situation.

Haha, exactly. Kind of a "do as I say, not as I do" twist. That's why I have such a huge problem with the neighborhood boogaloo taking place right now. Retail follows rooftops. What did these people think was going to happen.

Yeah this is typical close the door on the next guy right after you let me in behavior. Now, there may be something less dense that can go there than a supermarket, but honestly the developer can put something way less attractive than a Publix there right now without going through this process. Whatever happens, that land is not going to stay empty forever. They would be better off working with the developer to ensure they get a nice looking building and maybe taking stock of the alternatives here.
I've had Publix subs...not overly impressed. The really old Publix that used to be close to my grandparents in da'Bronx had a great bakery. Stopped in at the Publix in Jax, FL last year...not impressed. Harris Teeter has great subs! But then, as long as the bread is fresh and the roast beef plentiful, I can make a great sub!!!
I don't think it matters about all this for and against. I've watched other neighborhoods oppose other strip malls similar and in my opinion, the developer always wins because the town considers the revenue they will get.
And, the people that most oppose it will be the ones that shop there!
