I've owned Jeep 4x4s for the past 15 years or so here and I find it very helpful when needed. During the snow escapades we have this year, I was able to operate and get through areas that many other vehicles were not. We have also accessed beach areas along the Outer Banks that you can only get to with a 4x4. I certainly don't use it more than a few times per year and yes they're more expensive to purchase on the front end (mine have all been used and run great) and yes they get poorer gas mileage (I average 17 MPG) and yes stopping on ice/snow makes no difference whether you have 4x4 or not, however starting on snow/ice or even going up a slight incline...it makes all the difference in the world. Not being trapped because my vehicle can't navigate in adverse conditions is something I find great value in.
Absolutely - as long as you don't mind three crazy kids and a crazy dog, too.
