Hi, I am in need of finding out some places that are centered around individuals 55 and older as a planned community anywhere in the Durham/Chapel Hill/Hillsborough area. Brier Creek is a fine area too, but not further east than that. I just want to find out any further information that you may have about them. Thanks so much!

I live in the new Del Webb > 55 community in Brier Creek - Carolina Arbors. It's an "active > 55 community" with a Durham address, located just behind the intersection of 70 and TW Alexander. 12 models, priced from low 200's to well over 500K, sized accordingly from 1100+ sf to over 3000sf. Close to 200 homes have been sold already, with plans for over 1200 when complete in about 6 years. Phase II is opening soon. The clubhouse construction will begin shortly as well and is due to be completed by the summer of 2015. The clubhouse will be identical to the one in Carolina Preserve in Cary (you can check it out). 34,000 sf, both indoor and outdoors pools, full gym, tennis course, billiard room meeting rooms etc etc.

We love it here so far. Great location and we've met lots of really nice people. Feel free to DM if you have any questions.

There are very few options for actual 55+ communities other than Del Webb. There might be resales in the other smaller communities, such as the Hovnanian Renaissance in Durham, Heritage Pines in Cary, Chapelwood in Chapel Hill or Orchard Villas in Apex. I believe there is also a low-maintenance section of Heritage Wake Forest, where they do lawn maintenance. In addition, if the budget permits, there are many communities on golf courses that are attractive for "retiring in place".

Toll Brothers builds some homes designed to be senior-friendly with main-floor master bedrooms. Some of these are at Hasentree and there may be a few left at Regency at Brier Creek. These would be in the higher-price ranges. Another place with resales is the Villas at Culp Arbor in Chapel Hill, priced in the $300K range.

There is also the older community of Fearrington in Pittsboro/Chapel Hill which has recreation facilities and is next to a Duke Health Wellness center with an indoor pool.

The best way to finding these communities is to Google "55places".
