I have a desktop and laptop to be safely recycled. Since I still have data on the computers, I'd like to recycle it on a legit place. I can't erase data from my laptop since its power button is not working. Thanks.

Check the manufacturer of the computer, they might take it back and dispose of it. I think Dell and Apple have safe recycle programs.

If they work, maybe consider donating them.

I like Purple Elephant because he donates the refurbished old computers to underprivileged folks.

If you have any personal information at all on the laptop, I strongly recommend finding a way to destroy the hard drive first. If you can't get the power to come on, you (or a technician) can open the laptop and physically remove it.

Once you're ready to dispose of the laptop, if you live in the city of Raleigh, they will come pick it up. Here's the info from the City of Raleigh web site (http://www.raleighnc.gov/portal/server.pt/gateway/PTARGS_0_2_306_202_0_43/http%3B/pt03/DIG_Web_Content/category/Resident/Garbage_and_Recycling/Recycling/Cat-FAQ-2005215-120036-Frequently_Asked_Questio.html - broken link).

Raleigh residents can call Solid Waste Services at 831-6890 to arrange for computer collection. Once an appointment is made the computer is placed at the curbside. Acceptable items include: computer monitors, cords, processing units, computer speakers, scanners, parts, keyboards, mice, fax machines and copiers.
