Can't wait until the next drought, like we had in the summer of 2002 and then (much worse) in 2007 when they were counting down the days of water we had left. Guess all these new folks will happily give up their share of the water.

I can't speak to Raleigh, but in Orange County water usage is actually down significantly over the past several years, despite an increase in population, due to conservation efforts and the use of reclaimed water by the University.
But...but...but with this growth maybe we'll get a White Castle!!
I don't personally eat white castle, but it would do so well here. That and Tim Hortons. I don't think the people at Tim Hortons understand how many people have relocated in NY, NJ, and the NE. There's two in Virginia Beach, just bring one to Raleigh!

I can't wait until the next drought either. I'm sick of all this rain. Of course you have to be careful how you define drought around here. The local weather officials will call a drought any period of 14 days where we don't get a heavy rain. After this soaking winter, and apparently now another very wet spring, I look forward to long periods without any rain! We're not going to run out of water. Our reservoirs are overfilled, and the CoE hasn't drained Falls Lake over the winter lately. Our last "shortage" at Falls Lake was a major "oopsie" by the CoE who assumed our typical wet spring would fill the lake up, and it never happened. Falls Lake is well stocked for summer.

Now that the CSA is over 2 million, it will be interesting to see what might happen. quote]
Reaching 2 million on top of the growth and accolades for the area will definitely bring visibility to the Triangle. As a region, there is still maturity to be gained. More walkable areas, less sprawl, great public spaces, and more major (visible) corporations. This is already happening in some ways, and will continue to build on each other.
Effective implementation of (1) Park Center, (2) Durham-Chapel Hill LRT, (3) Wake LRT and Union Station, (4) Dix Park will all be major steps in the right direction.
Since 2007 the City of Raleigh -- which also provides water to Garner, Rolesville, Wake Forest, Knightdale, Wendell, and Zebulon -- has increased capacity by opening the Benton plant. It doesn't have nearly as much capacity as the Johnson plant, but the Benton plant does not depend on Falls Lake. The next increase in capacity will come from Little River Home Page, which also will not depend on Falls Lake. The City thinks that when Little River comes online, they'll be ok until 2040. After that, it's a question of conservation not supply.
Of course, everything ultimately depends on rainfall into a rather small set of watersheds. The occasional tropical storm or hurricane does help replenish the water table.
Isn't one of them in a suburb, not the city of Charlotte?
That is correct. There is one in Pineville, next to I-485. The first one to open in the Charlotte area was the H&M in Northlake Mall, in north Charlotte. The third H&M to open in the CLT area will be at SouthPark Mall. There's also been rumors of one opening at Concord Mills.

Honestly, if they are only good until 2040, I hope they are looking for the next place to get water from now. They've been planning Little river for close to 25 years now and it will come online about 30 years after the initial study, less time than 2040 is from now. I assume that all the cities and towns in Wake and maybe Durham and Orange will have to band together to somehow try to get water from Kerr or Gaston or build a new mega reservoir somewhere away form here.
And still no light rail promised for Raleigh. Great foresight, Durham-Chapel Hill.
