It ain't so new, the mob's been doing this for a long, long time here in the good old U.S.A.
That's a very true statement. However in today's world it's very easy to find information about you, your family and friends on the internet. I can simply google my name and my home borough and a picture of my house, tax records, property values and other local information and stats come up on the screen.

Yup. It's very disturbing. I encountered someone via Facebook who is more than a little unhinged, and I'm not happy he could so easily look up my address. In fact I did think I saw him driving by recently, but told myself it could have been anyone.
Atlanta has about 20 armed robberies, car-jackings, smash-n-grabs every single day. They ambush people in Buckhead and force them to withdraw money from ATMs at gunpoint. They walk in Waffle Houses in Buckhead with guns and demand everyone's wallets and cell phones.
There are some lousy parents out there. And it's getting worse, not better. This is a new America.

I think a good deal of this can be blamed on the economic downturn, from which many areas simply aren't close to recovering.

I'm not sure people who had well paying jobs, particularly white collar jobs, are turning to smash-and-grab or armed robberies. They are the ones most affected by this never-ending downturn.

Nope. They are displacing people who used to work retail jobs and so forth, so they still have jobs and/or some means of support in most cases.

I'm usually with you on that idea completely, but in this case the guy in jail was a Crips leader or something - seems like no amount of other opportunities would rehabilitate this guy. I guess you could look at his home life and all, but sometimes people are just stone cold criminals.

Oh, I was talking about the general rise in crime. Totally agree that this particular case was organized and gang related, not income related.
