Anyone else see the Apache helicopter flying in circles over the Falls of Neuse bridge area in North Raleigh today around 7:00 PM? They were having some fun. Maybe they were checking out the new pathway that RDUBiker took pictures of.
Used to see one often south of Garner. Our neighbor was some bigshot down at a base in Fayetteville, and would sometimes fly home in one. They'd do a "loop" for us kids, if we were out shooting hoops or something when he flew in!
There is a squadron (is that the right word for helicopters) of Apaches based out at RDU for the NC National Guard. No idea of their deployment status right now though.
There are both kinds around here! I grew up in Fayetteville, so saw a lot of helicopters in my time, but rarely saw the Osprey aircraft — very distinctive looking. (Didn't see the osprey bird much either, but I see them around the Haw River now.)
It seemed before the unpleasantness in Iraq and Afghanistan that I saw military aircraft more frequently. Perhaps they are returning again.
