You and your husband would spend well over an hour a day commuting. I would avoid intentionally putting myself into that situation. You mentioned kids. How would you attend events at your kids' schools? Drive another hour plus that day? How about picking up a sick kid? Live closer to work or work closer to home. Don't move an hour away from where your job is.
Thank you for reminding me why we wanted to relocate to NC in the first place!
I think I have been so caught up in the "What if's" I forgot that. We wanted to have a more laid back lifestyle with our two children and time to enjoy them, the outside and all the things there are to do out there. I think we will concentrate our search in the Greenville and surrounding areas and let the chips fall where they may.
Have you researched what schools are available in the areas you are considering? Many of the schools (especially in rural Eastern NC) are abominable, depending on where one is coming from. Crime and poverty can be rampant in small NC towns, and Kinston is certainly no exception.

We are not actually looking to live in Kinston. We are currently looking at Winterville or possible Richlands for the first year. Richlands seems to have a lot of homes (due I suspect to the military) that offer a lot of room for a lower price point. Since I don't have to look for work right away my husband's thought is to rent in Richlands for the first year and then see where we would like to live after that. For the schools I am considering either a private school or even possibly home schooling for that year. Any thoughts?

I was not referring only to the schools in Kinston.. Most of ENC..
OK, I guess it depends on where you are going in Raleigh. I am from Kinston, and I go home to visit my parents monthly. It is 1 hr and 45 minutes tops from Durham. It may be a hour and 15 minutes from Raleigh. It used to be longer, but you don't have to go through Smithfield anymore, and you can also go 70 for a bit of the trip.
