I live one hour and thirty minutes one way from Merck right now. I want something close. I went and looked at apartment only nine minutes away. They had security everywhere everything electronically locked. SCARY.
I would like to stay where I know its safe and I can walk my dog without a stun gun in my pocket. Merck is totally secured, but once you leave it looks pretty ghetto. Any suggestions?

Oh yeah, I think that area near Old Oxford Road can be really bizarre.

I'd love to advise you on specific apartments, but I can't really in that area. Would you go for a 20 minute drive? I think I've seen Croasdaile Apartments mentioned here. I live in Durham but not North Durham - from what I understand, North Durham is pretty safe - I almost rented a house by putting an ad on Craigslist, maybe try that?

Yep -- the North Durham areas east of Guess Rd., north of I-85 are very nice and plenty affordable. There's some luxury apartments about ten years old in Croasdaile Farm, run by Garden View Realty (great landlord) -- available for a bit less money now that brand-new apartments are coming online downtown. Also, the apartments between Guess and Hillandale north of I-85 are worth a look. Or, you could look for house rentals in the Infinity/Latta or Rose of Sharon/Cole Mill Rd area. And of course, there's always the "popular" neighborhoods around downtown Durham. Good luck!

I was also going to mention the apartments in Croasdaile Farm. Very quiet and safe community yet close to town and only a short drive up to Merck.
