I've been here for about a month now, and see that there is a shopping center around every corner, but where in the heck can I go to get a late night bite. Yesterday I drove around and around. Downtown seems to pretty much close up shop early. I knew cookout was open, but wasn't in cookout mood. Wasn't in a bar mood either. Then I said, I'll just get some jimmy's(In Greensboro it does not close until 3am), here 10pm. I plain out don't eat McNasty's. After burning a little more gas than I wanted to, I settled on Wendy's.
I worked nights out in RTP for 13 years! It's not just Cary! Other than a few McDs or Wendy's, there are not many options. Many RTP eateries close up after lunch!
Waffle House or Denny's is about all other than a pub.
It's not just Cary, it's this whole area! Same issue in Chapel Hill. Even most pubs close their kitchens after 9-10pm. There's a 24hr Dennys in Durham, but that may be a bit of a drive for you.
Even in DT Raleigh there isn't much...A couple of pizza and Chinese places that cater to the NCSU crowd, and aside from bar food, that's it. I haven't found a 24hr whole in the wall Mexican place yet. It was mentioned on a previous thread, but a Greek-owned diner would be a good thing; the type of place where you can order everything from fried catfish to lemon chicken to pork chops to pasta to salads to steak to omlettes and pancakes...the type of place with an enormous menu, and all open 24 hours.
I dont eat at the likes of Waffle House or Denny's for health reasons. The only place that I have found that is open late is Cosmic Cantina and that is a good drive for me (from North Raleigh to DT Durham). Ah, lord, why can't there be a 24hour family owned diner?
A late night restaurant in Cary sounds like a great way to throw money away on a business. There are numerous places to eat after 10pm in downtown Raleigh. Out in the suburbs? Not so much. The demand just isn't that great to warrant the investment.
I know you said "not a bar", but come on people, these places have full menu's fairly late:
Train Station
Rally Point
Doherty's
Abbey Road
Hibernian
Ale House
Tylers (Apex)
JD's (Apex)
Rudy's (Apex)
Rudino's
I didn't check each and every one of them, so some may close at 10, but these places are all full service restaurants with menus (and drinks). Some are pretty dang good.
And there are many more. If you want to eat out later than 9 or 10, you're going to have to probably go to a place that serves alcohol (because all the people who don't drink are already asleep, or are at home playing video games). ;-)
in addition to the ones listed above, also Mac's Tavern, Spirits (both in the general downtown area), The Big Easy, Ruckus, Woody's, Gypsy's shiny diner (till 11 on weeknights and 4 am on weekends), Dave and Busters
Not much stays open right in in downtown Cary though.

Thursday-Saturday, both Beasley's and Chuck's (which aren't NCSU crowd and aren't bar food) are open until midnight.
