Stereotypes of Neighborhoods for Young Professional (Raleigh, Five Points: cheap apartments, to rent, schools)

I’m moving to the Raleigh area for work this summer and I’m trying to find somewhere to live. I have a lot of general questions, so I’m not sure where to start. In general, where would you recommend someone in their early or mid 20s to live? I like being able to walk places, and I don’t want to rent in the suburbs.

I hear a lot about places like Brier Creek, Downtown, GlenwoodSouth, Cameron Village, but I don’t know much about the character of these places and I don’t have time to visit. So, in an effort to make the topic somewhat interesting, if you had to write a few sentences about popular neighborhoods in Raleigh and the stereotypes that generally go with them, what would you conclude about some of the people and places? For example, justlooking at older threads I get the feeling that Glenwood South is young andtrendy (lots of clubs), downtown is walkable but kind of snobby/hipster (not exactly a bad thing, justa vibe I get and I’m not sure it fits me), Brier Creek is full of people that commute to RTP, and Western BLVD around NCSU has dirt cheap apartments but alot of students and a good bit of crime. Is this true or wildly inaccurate? I know I’m asking for generalizations, but where I’m from, neighborhoods do attract certain types of people, and a little orientation to Raleigh would be helpful. Any help you could provide would be wonderful.

what's your budget, and what are your housing needs? where will your job be located, and what kind of commute do you want?

fwiw, the fairly fresh out of college that are FROM the area or went to one of the larger local schools, they gravitate towards ITB Raleigh & North Hills area. ITB would include: Cameron Village, Glenwood South, Five Points, Mordecai, Oakwood, Boylan Heights to name the most prominent neighborhoods.
