I used to be a strictly WRAL viewer/website user. A few things made me switch. First was their website reformatting; I couldn't find anything I was looking for anymore and the stories were so scattered. But mostly it was the "drama" factor that I was constantly getting on the weather. Everything seemed like doomsday. I am admittedly overly anxious about weather so I prefer to have the more fact based WTVD weather reports. I mostly watch that now; plus the 4pm evening news fits better with my evening schedule.
WTVD's production is good, but the fact that any tiny story is "Breaking News" makes it unwatchable. I prefer WRAL, but both networks believe in the "if it bleeds, it leads" way of reporting news. If WNCN didn't have the feeling of being produced in a high school I would probably watch it more often.
See, as a former and maybe future news blogger, the comments about folks getting their news from City-Data, great as this forum is, are missing one thing:
If good, reputable, independent sources of news didn't exist, we wouldn't be informed forum participants who could share news items. Period.
It's unfashionable these days to subscribe to news outlets or pay for content in an everything-is-free world, but we should recognize that news outlets, particularly print but also good media outlets like WRAL and WUNC protect all of us by being watchdogs on government, corporations and social issues.
I've seen the Herald-Sun struggle since the recession though it is doing a bit better now. I've seen the Indy Weekly really suffer since it was sold to the Willamette Week folks.
I like the WRAL is owned by a wealthy local family who give back to the community in big ways. They're rooted here, unlike the WTVDs of the world. Jim Goodmon has also been one of the major voices against media consolidation, something that has big implications for how we all get our news.
Whatever news outlet you use, support them and help them be successful!
We rely on WRAL for local news/weather. ABC for national. (Huge crush on David Muir here. )
