Hi, i recently moved to durham in a 2bed 2bath 1211sq.ft apartment. I was amazed to see the electricity bill for $250 for last month. I was looking for a website to see if i could calculate the estimated bill by square foot in this area but couldnt find any reliable information. I dont think i use electricity any more than usual. I wanted to check with others in the area to see how much they pay for a 1200sqft apartment or home. Really need some advice.

Thanks.

Well, not knowing if you have electric heat and hot water and what you set your AC at, I think that it sounds high. My house is twice the size of your apt but we have gas heat and hot water. We keep the house cold in terms of AC. Last month's bill was $102 with taxes added in. Duke Energy is the electric co.

Thanks for your reply Lan. I have duke energy too. My apt is all electric. Still it seems too high. I am home only on weeknights & weekends so i am not using much heater/ac. I dont turn it off when i am gone but set it to a 10deg difference. My old apt was on gas but i didnt get more than $70 in electricity & $40 in gas bills. It was in southwest va which is a bit cheaper. I was expecting to pay few extra dollars here but this seems a lot.

That is incredibly high, especially for the temps in the last month. I think the past 30 day cycle I was at the lowest consumption yearly. I have an all electric house 2000 sq ft and the bill was around $80 IIRC.

I wonder if you are getting charged for other apartments too...

If you ran the heat a LOT over the past month you might have been using the electric strips only, and that would account for it, but there wouldn't have been a reason to. It was warm(er). Turning a heat pump down and then up when you get home consumes a similar amount of electricity (it doesn't save much) because a heat pump turns on the backup heat to help warm the air up quickly.

Was it an actual reading or an estimate?

When I lived in an apartment about that size my highest bill was $95.

I don't know. I'm in a small 1BR/1BA and my bill is never less than 100-110 a month.

It was actual reading. In the month of March my bill was $150 for a total of 1277 KWH (32 days, 40kwh per day average). Since i am enrolled in automated payments i am yet to receive detailed paper bill for the current payment.
I will check with my neighbors to see if they get similar usage. I did run heat for few days last month when temps suddenly dropped. Even then it should not be so much. I need to dig deep to see whats going on. Maybe a faulty appliance.

Wow, that really does seem high. My house is 1100 sq ft and I paid $88.90 last month. My highest bill this year has been $150 for February (paid in March). My heat pump is pretty old, but, I don't run the heat overnight because it's also pretty loud and is right outside my bedroom window.

Was the meter read before you moved in? You may be paying for usage before you occupied the unit. Ask Duke what the average bills were in your unit and when the meter was read to start your account.
