Have you checked out good old Harris Teeter? IIRC, their crab meat isn't local but from the US (Chesapeake Bay area) and around $24, not much more than Costco.

I'm not positive, but I believe the package at HT is smaller than the one sold at Costco.

Why do you guys think crab meat from the US is better than the one from Asia, though? I'm not saying it's not, but there seems to be this underlying assumption, which I'm not sure has been tested thoroughly enough.

My experience is that what I get at the Farmers Market is fresher than anything I have gotten at a supermarket, regardless of what country it came from.

Local is fresher. Not sure about stuff from Alaska or somewhere else far away vs Thailand.

Have a can in my fridge so I checked. Imported from the Phillipines. So not local but still pretty good quality I think. But I can see the appeal of local/Chesapeake crab if you can get it for $24-25/lb. Costco just allows me to get it year round and store if I'm not immediately using it .

Speaking for myself, I think crabs from US waters is likely to be safer. I have no way to prove it but I feel it's a chance not worth taking. I don't consume any seafood that originates from Asian countries. I also agree with others' "fresher" comment. A crab meat dish is only a once in a while thing for me (usually when I see it on sale at HT) so I figure might as well spend a little bit more and get better quality.
