I relocated to the area several weeks ago but until now have not really picked up a newspaper. Either I've been oblivious, or newspaper stands aren't as common as they are in other cities (I'm living in Carrboro). At any rate, besides the News Observer, are there any major newspapers worth reading in this area? Local Chapel Hill/Carrboro papers?

Thanks in advance for patience with this most ignorant of questions!

The Independent, a free newspaper published in Durham each week, is beloved by many and hated by probably just as many. They do at least one investigative report per week into local issues--toes are stepped on, backlash is raised etc. You might like it. Also has an extremely thorough entertainment section for all things going on in the Triangle for the upcoming week.

There is a little newspaper stand near the parking lot entrance side of Weaver Street Market that has the local papers. Inside WSM by the main cash registers you can find the free papers (like the Independent).

Beside Visart near the ArtsCenter and Cat's Cradle (I *think* this Visart is still there...they seem to be closing down some stores) there is an actual newstand in a building. I think it is called The Newstand.

There is also this: http://www.thecarrboronews.com/ and someone told me there is a paper copy, but have not seen it yet.

The Chapel Hill News has been owned by the News and Observer for some years now. I think that it comes to N&O subscribers in the area, though I'm not certain. The N&O also owns the Cary News and several other local papers.

The Durham Herald Sun is still independent of the N&O, but went through an ownership change a couple years ago and has been having some issues since then.

Both Duke and UNC have good student newspapers, and both are online. Duke's is The Chronicle and UNC's is The Daily Tarheel.

The Chapel Hill News came to our house in Carrboro for free, but it is not delivered everywhere for free.
