A friend of mine had some spray foam insulation added to their crawlspace, and started having health problems almost immediately. Apparently the stuff is toxic and hell to remove.

Can anyone recommend a local company that specializes in removal/remediation?

I am sorry, for your friend's situation. I read this post as I had thought of adding the foam to my crawlspace, but had my doubts. Now I think I'll pass as I'm not convinced of its safety. have you checked out the EPA's info on this? It outlines suggested first steps. See the section header "Should I Take Action" - Exposure Potential | Design for the Environment (DfE) | US EPA However, I don't blame your friends for wanting the stuff removed.

I'm not sure to what extent he's already looked into all of that but I will pass it along. He doesn't use this forum so I thought I'd put in for recommendations after he mentioned his need. Supposedly the company that put the insulation in will not take it out, which I found odd. I just thought maybe someone else here had been down that road.

Yes, hopefully someone will post a referral for your friend. I hope so. What a terrible situation to be in.

Is it on the foundation walls or subfloor? I have no idea who can remove it, but if just on the foundation walls maybe it can be encapsulated with a sealed vapor barrier. It is usually scraped off and acetone applied, but that would be a tough job on foundation walls and virtually impossible if sprayed onto the subfloor.

This is interesting. I have seen this spray foam advertised as being the best thing since sliced bread. Never thought how much of a pain it would be for a roof leak.

A roof leak is what worries us about applying foam to inside the roof as well. A couple of neighbors did this and say they noticed an immediate difference in heating and especially cooling costs. But roofs leak.

One of them has a metal roof though. Which is what we want eventually.

To get back to the OP, that would be awful to have a reaction to the application, hope they find some help.
