We currently have Verizon, and are happy with the service. However, their smallest plan is WAY more talk and data than we need. We rarely text and pay 10 cents when we do, which is fine with us. Pay as you go data and phone with Verizon will be even higher cost than our current plan.
We do travel, so we like the coverage of Verizon. But we would like to consider a provider that has plans for users who don't depend on their cell phones for primary phone and primary data services (we have Ooma, tablets and notebooks with wifi for that).
Second PagePlus. They have a 1200 min/3000 text plan that comes with 500 mb of data for under $30. It runs under the native Verizon network. I've been on Net10, with their unlimited talk/text and 2.5 gb of data, for over 6 months under the same native Verizon network without issue. I travel all over the US for my job.
Only issue with PagePlus is the 1200 minutes are just that. You get deducted even for calling another Verizon customer.
Look at how many mins you use per month. You might be better off on a pay-as-you-go plan from Tracfone or similar.

Is their high speed data 3G or 4G LTE? What kind of speeds are you getting?

No Verizon MVNO uses 4G, Verizon doesn't allow it unfortunately. If you want 4G I suggest going with the AT&T side of the house.
3G Verizon is standard speed, roughly 1 mbps up/down. Sometimes it goes fast in the unpopulated areas, I've seen 2.7 mbps down. The opposite is also true, I've seen as low as 0.3 mbps down in larger cities. Raleigh seems to be pretty decent, enough for web browsing, map/navigation etc. but definitely no streaming video.
I use PagePlus and like them. Their support is good and located in Ohio if i recall correctly. They use 3G and Verizon towers. I cut my bill in half by switching from Verizon.
