I watched dozens and dozens of naked and un-diapered kids in and out of that all day. I watched kids puke in the water, pee in the water, throw hamburgers and hot dogs in the water, take off diapers in the water...blech.

While that stuff does all sound gross, it is not that significant in terms to polluting those lakes compared to the massive about of polluted runoff and wastewater that get released upstream into them annually.

I guarantee you there are plenty of animals that come into contact with the water. I've seen cows in the eno, drinking out of one end and crapping out the other. They at least had the sense to face upstream. All the major tributaries (Eno, Flat, Little) run through farm land and significant numbers of cattle graze along the stream.

Most of "it" comes from runoff from the areas surrounding the lakes. Animals poop on the ground. LOTS of them. Then these nightly showers that we have, wash the poop into the water.

With that said, those beach areas are nasty. I have no problem swimming in the deeper waters of the lake that are only accessible with a boat. But I avoid those beaches.

The hamburgers, hotdogs and vomit are no issue really. The catfish love that stuff and will have it gone in a matter of hours.
