I wonder what kind of trees they're planting.

Quite a variety - listed as small, medium and large

Logically enough, the City of Oaks even offers oak trees.

Lots of neighborhoods have benefited. The city does require that the tree is planted in the right of way. Seems to me that could be problematic for the larger trees where sidewalks are present as the tree roots expand.

Most of the folks in my neighborhood had them planted when the program was first started. The city came around a couple of times and pruned them. Mine is flowering cherry, and by the way they pruned it, it's fairly narrow, so it doesn't hang way out over the street or sidewalk. It's probably about 12' at this point. It's a nice addition to the neighborhood.
