We always buy the cheap GE stuff from Lowes and buy the extended warranty

We've started having issues with our nine year old dryer stopping before the load is complete. After checking the vent ducting, thermostats, lint buildup, etc. I've concluded its the motor. New motor bought on line is $160. New Whirlpool dryer delivered from HD is $349 this week. Still designed and built in the US too. For some reason I feel foolish buying overseas junk, when I can get the same quality domestically.

Home Depot is currently having a sale on their major appliances, up to 30% off.

It's all junk, domestic or import.

You need to either buy a commercial unit or rent.

Too many stories of bad service from extended warranty firms. Most manufacturers do not operate their own service locations any more.

Bear in mind that even sales prices can be negotiated. HH Gregg seems to do the most negotiating because I believe the sales people work on commission, that does not mean you will get the lowest price. We got our LG washer and Dryer at Lowes, they had the best price at the time. We had checked consumer reports for ratings and the machines were ranked highly.

I do agree with others, it is unfortunate that these machines are so computerized now because it is just more to break and they usually do. My mom has a 30 year old dryer in her house, and it works well. It is a pretty basic machine but it has a pretty basic function. I do not see my dryer or any dryer made now lasting 30 years.

  2. Kenmore Elite 41073
  3. Maytag Maxima XL MHW8000AG
  4. LG WM8000H[V]A

  2. Kenmore Elite 31412
  3. LG WT1701CV
  4. LG WT1001CW
  5. Samsung WA422PRHD[WR]

You should be able to find all but the Kenmores at just about any appliance store or retailer who sells appliances (Best Buy, Lowe's, Home Depot). The Kenmores would be at Sears. Also keep in mind that while the top loaders will be cheaper, they tend to use more water and are more mechanically complex (thus more can go wrong with them). Go with one of those front loaders and you should be fine!

For what it's worth we got our washer and dryer at Best Buy about 5 or 6 years ago and they were great - delivery was on time and they set up everything as needed.
Thanks everyone for the advice. Got an lg top loader(#4 above) from home depot. They are having a sale. Only got the washer but throughtp the 9th you can get the washer and a comparable dryer for 1k. Delivery is free and they take the old one.
