Is Durham dismissing drought? (http://www.charlotte.com/breaking_news/story/409022.html - broken link)

I saw this online today. I can't imagine anyone not taking the low water supply seriously. Most people are doing all they can to conserve water but "let it mellow" in a public bathroom? I know that would help but that's a hard habit to break.

This is going to sound crass, but I'm the only one I ever hear not flushing the toilet," she said. "I don't see people taking this seriously."

She's talking, of course, about the drought, which now has Durham down to around 40 days of water left in its main supply....

She plans to make a plea at tonight's City Council meeting for a ramped-up public outreach campaign.

"We need people to take this seriously," Catotti said, adding that she hopes water use can go down to 10 million gallons per day.

She wants to see fliers posted in schools, churches and any other place people gather. She also has pushed for the city to offer low-flow shower heads free of charge. They can be purchased for $3 now......

It's maybe a little icky, but the water savings would be significant if everyone cut way back on flushing, Westbrook said.

Yeah, I would definitely be worried about the "splash factor". Heck, I worry about it even when a public toilet *has* been flushed!

Also, the idea of using paper plates and cups is not really saving water. Somewhere a lot of water was used in the pulp mill to make that paper in the first place. Just pushes the problem off somewhere else. And, I don't know about you, but plates and cups are only about 30% of the volume of dishes that I have to wash (by hand, using about two gallons per "load") each day.

Basically, Durham waited way WAY too long to do something and now we're all going to pay the price. Literally.
