How can I go from the Raleigh-Durham area on I85N to New Hope, PA and avoid big traffic areas?

In Fredericksburg, VA, use 218 to cut over to 301. You can rejoin I-95 north of DC at Route 32 or 100 south of Baltimore. Or if the Baltimore traffic sounds bad, use Route 50/301 towards Annapolis and head for the Eastern Shore, northbound on 301.

Slightly longer route, but you can take 29 up to 64 to 81 and then follow it in. (There are a few short cuts that you'll find if you do your research.)

My guess is that it adds about an hour or two, but:
1. It is a BEAUTIFUL ride, and a lot less stressful, and
B. If you are travelling during busy time, it could SAVE hours if you miss a jam in DC.

Food for thought, depends on how bad you want to avoid DC, but 81 through Shanendoah Valley is one of my favorite interstates, and 29 up to about Lovingston VA is also a great ride.

Yep.
This is our route to Central and Western PA. It is longer than DC/Baltimore to Southeastern PA.

You can also leave the Triangle area around 6:00 AM and avoid most of the predictable traffic jams. If you reach Quantico around 10:00 AM you'll have beaten the AM rush in D.C. and you'll be through Baltimore well before the PM rush begins. I've done this dozens of times with great success.

However, you need to monitor traffic religiously (every 15 minutes or so) because one misstep can consume hours of your driving life.

Great traffic avoidance strategies so far!

Depending on what I need to do and budget, my answer is sometimes "Southwest Airlines" (to Philly) and "Enterprise."
