Hey everybody, I'm from Bronx,NY I have been to Charlotte several times and to Raleigh only once. I'm ready to relocate and start a better life for my daughter, because although i am a true city girl, NY bound i would never want to raise my child here. I'm ready to leave NY but i would like to be in an area where i won't go into complete culture shock. The area I've been thinking about moving to is Raleigh, but i don't know that much about it. Could someone, anyone, please help me out. I'm looking for a house in the range of $100k-$300k in a nice area to raise kids, in a good school district and close to entertainment(movies, restaurants, shopping malls) basically some where that i won't get bored out of my mind. I also wanted to know if there where any stores out there like costcos or sams club. Any information is greatly appreciated, thank you!
Hi,
I'm in a similar boat - single mom with young son in LA, want a better life for him (but do love being in a city that has everything you could ever want or need - cept affordable living I started out looking into Raleigh but switched to Durham, from what I'm learning it has more elements of that urban feel (socioeconomic mix, more liberal, etc). Have you checked out Durham? It's cheaper too - something that seems a big plus with having a child to support!
Durham also has something in common with many cities, a deserved reputation for areas of violent crime. Murders every weekend. School system also has serious issues. One board member was known to engage in fisticuffs at board meetings.

Visit Durham. Live in Raleigh or Chapel Hill.
Or, live in Durham, find out that stereotypes are often wrong, have a short drive to work and spend more time with your kids.

*head explodes and blood spills out all over work desk*
OP, please do visit Durham and decide for yourself. I think it's a viable option for you. All of the big box stores plus culture and a quirkiness that's a bit like Brooklyn. Arts and culture abound. Sure it's got crime but hell, someone was shot in Cary recently. Some people here would have you think it's like the South Bronx in the 70s-80s and that's just not the case.
I forget where I saw it, but in one of the threads a while back, someone posted a study listing where people from various areas tend to live when they transfer to the Triangle. One of the striking findings was that people from urban centers like NYC & Chicago were far more likely to live in Durham.
I'll poke through the archives & see what I can find.
Hey, I'm from Yonkers and my hubby is from the Bronx (Mosholu and Grand Concourse area). OK here is the deal, I'm gonna lay it to you straight in true NY'er form (lol)... moving down here is the BEST thing we ever did for ourselves! I was so sick and tired of the hustle and bustle and stress of living there that I just wanted to get out! We chose Cary for our first stop and resided there for three years before buying a house in Fuquay. At first it was rough, I'll be honest. We were homesick, missed our family and wondered if we made a mistake leaving everything we ever knew (even tho it sucked) behind. It took a good year to get adjusted and start to feel like NC was our new home. We got jobs and made friends very easily and really started enjoy the laid back atmosphere, the friendliness and just how much easier life here is in general. We bought a 4 br home for $100 more a month than our rent on our 1 br apt in Yonkers was. Home ownership was nothing but a dream when we lived there. We are here 5 years now and we go to NY to visit often and truthfully, I can't stand it now! I have a 3 day limit before I start losing my sanity and want to come back to a normal paced life here. There are so many things that stress you out up there that you don't even notice until after you leave (the traffic, no parking, horns, car alarms, etc).
Here's my words of advice for what they are worth: Life here is different, yes! However, if you come here looking for a change and embrace all that NC has to offer, you will be very happy here. If you come looking for a cheaper version of NY, you will be disappointed because it's not NY and that's the point. It's like night and day. If you think that's a good thing than you'll be all set. Anything you can do in NY, you can do here just not on as grand a scale. There are movies, bars, theatres, parks, etc. There are not thousands of these things but they are here. There are tons of clean parks and greenways, free outdoor events, concerts, etc. There are many transplants here from all over so there is still somewhat of a melting pot feel here and that diversity is great. You will meet southerners, californians, floridians, new yorkers, etc all who came here looking for a better life and trying to enjoy it.
You will have no problem finding a home in that price range near shopping, restaurants, parks and in a safe area and good school district for your child. Good luck!
If ONE person is involved in fisticuffs, who cares?
Doesn't it take TWO to tango?
