Yup, will definitely look into that. For right now, Amica is the lowest homeowners insurance quotes so far, no letter to sign and very friendly customer service -so we are just going with that for now.

StateFarm agent finally replied back with "A new law in NC will eventually require all insurance companies to issue this yearly letter."

I'd be interested in his response, if you asked him to provide the Statute Number so you (we) could look up the actual wording (at North Carolina General Assembly - General Statutes)

There is a proposed law which does the opposite.

Sen. Michael Lee wants to stop homeowners insurance companies from charging more than the state-approved maximum rates.

The Wilmington Republican has sponsored a bill, SB 683, that would prohibit homeowners insurance companies from skirting the state’s regulatory process by getting policyholders to sign a “consent to rate” form that agrees to higher rates.

It sounds like he is dodging the question. Since Amica doesn't exceed the rate limits, there is no letter to sign in the first place. Maybe NC is going to require insurance companies to that send such a letter to have to re-send it each year?

It won't affect me, as I dropped State Farm and went with Amica as well. No letter to sign and I cut my insurance to 1/2 of what State Farm was going to charge.

I have never received one of those letters from Erie. Our rate has increased slightly for 2015-2016, but after comparing rates, I will gladly stick with Erie! I couldn't believe how much Liberty Mutual quoted me.

I have Erie and just received one the dreaded consent to rate forms. My policy renews in August.

Unfortunately, I don't think it's a bluff.
I think it's corporate policy, and the agents have no choice.
I've requesting anyone who got this letter and was able to keep their insurance without signing it, to step forward and let us know. None have.

Take this an incentive to shop around. Most here report finding better/cheaper coverage, once they look.

The problem with that is that you are required to carry insurance on your house. Your mortgage lender will know right away when your current insurance company doesn't take the payment from escrow.

It's just easier to shop and get a new carrier and then cancel your current one.

Amica remains one that does not (yet) require the consent form. I believe Nationwide is another (can't verify if that is still the case, though). As others have said, shop around. I saved a lot when I switched from State Farm to Amica - as in less than 1/2 of what State Farm was going to charge.
