I have to rent a clarinet for my son. It is my first time to do this. Could anyone share his/her opinion about a rental place they liked (or disliked) to help me to choose? Thanks

I rented a flute this past school year for my 6th grader. Don't remember the name of the place but it's off of Durant Rd near Fall of Neuse

It was a quality brand in great condition. Monthly payment was charged automatically to my credit card. At the end of the school year, I took it back, signed a form and handed them the flute. Super easy.

I remember googling around about rental places, and the one I rented from seemed to make the most sense for me.

Music and arts does the rentals for wake county public schools.

Yup. I have had no problems dealing with them so far.

I agree with the Music and Arts suggestion. As an arts educator, I have worked with them for many years, and recommend them highly.

We bought a clarinet off Craigslist for $100 that was one of the brands the middle school suggested. MUCH cheaper than renting month after month.

Totally agree.

I strongly suggest you consider buying a used instrument through Craigslist, eBay, etc. Most children play their instrument for at least three years and when you add up the monthly cost it's way cheaper to own. I made the rental mistake for my first but corrected it for my second.

And there's always a market to sell whatever you buy once your done with it, so it's not like you're stuck owning an instrument.

By the way if you buy the music and arts insurance they will fix pretty much anything and give you a replacement while it's being fixed. If you're like me and have a child that might be *ahem* prone to breakage then this policy will pay for itself. Trust me.

A lot of music rentals have a "rent to own" program. So all or some of what you pay in rental fees can be applied to purchasing the instrument if it seems like your child will want to stick with it.

Thank you for the great leads. I think I'll start checking what would work. From what I hear, I am more inclined to get a used instrument rather than rent. (Music & Arts advertise themselves a lot and can't go unnoticed... The cost with them will be around $300 (including the insurance) for one school year.
