If I remember correctly, we only had a Meet the Team thingie before 6th grade (it was during the day, in fact, memorable because it was the day of the earthquake!)
It would be a nice world if teachers got paid to work that additional day, but they don't. So if schools dont do this, I can't really blame them.

The week before school, teachers are already working so I don't see why kids cannot at least walk their schedules and say hello. I realize that it's time teachers could be planning, so they should maybe just set aside a small window for it, but that's part of teaching. (I say this having been a teacher)

This. I'm guessing that's why a lot of them are happening this week -- teachers are back at work.
And Red -- count your blessings. I have one of each. One is totally independent and the other would be happy if I went everywhere with her.

Huh? This whole week is required work days for teachers. Do you think they walk in on the first day ready to go?

So as I suspected, our school is the odd school out. The kids find out what team they are on in homeroom on the first day of school. You all will be happy when I finally pull my daughter out of this school because then I won't be complaining on here so much. We're applying to private school for next year.
Daniels MS put out teams last week. Meet the Teacher is tomorrow morning, for the kids and fams.
To make some feel better, they actually erroneously put out teams 10 days ago, but you had to have registered for some internet feature to see yours. That caused much anguish to our rising 7th grader who had NOT registered before, and thus couldn't see her team. Thank goodness the next day, anxiety watch ended when they announced that all of THOSE team assignments were wrong.
michgc, I know someone who had her child moved from Phillips to Smith. I think they had to show just cause, but they did get it done.
If Phillips is the problem school then at least the silver lining is their children weren't going to it a decade back when the principal got fired/arrested for pawning school equipment to fund his cocaine habit. Their football coach/teacher got 10 years around the same time for sexual offenses towards young male students too.
And they say Durham schools are bad
